The Berlin Diaries
Dear 3GDC Community,
My name is Emily Hall, and I’m honored to share my experiences as the granddaughter of Holocaust survivors on the panel following The Berlin Diaries on Thursday, June 12, at 7:30 PM at the Goldman Theater. This will be my first public speaking engagement with 3GDC.
My journey of connecting with the legacy of my late grandparents, Esther and Elias Mordechai, began about a year ago when I discovered my grandmother’s two-hour video testimony with the USC Shoah Foundation. In it, she recounts growing up in Ioannina, Greece; surviving Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen; and rebuilding her life as one of the only survivors from her community, eventually immigrating to Greensboro, North Carolina.
The Holocaust claimed the lives of approximately 67,000 Greek Jews—87% of the community. That loss still reverberates across generations, living in the bones of direct descendants. This led me to join the Living Links Speaker Training Program this past fall, where I deepened my commitment to sharing my grandmother’s story, so that the atrocities of genocide are not repeated.
With the alarming rise in antisemitism, The Berlin Diaries by Andrea Stolowitz, directed by Elizabeth Dinkova, arrives at a powerful and urgent time. This Oregon Book Award-winning play unfolds through a great-grandfather’s journal, tracing a family history scattered and nearly erased by the Holocaust. Two performers bring to life generations of characters, stitching together fractured memories and invisible histories—illuminating what has been lost, and what we can still reclaim.
I hope you’ll join me, 3GDC, and the wider community at this meaningful event, rooted in honoring our families’ legacies, the process of healing, and the pursuit of restorative truth.

Join me for a special evening at Theater J on Thursday, June 12 at 7:30 PM for a performance of The Berlin Diaries, followed by a post-show conversation with 3GDC.
I’ll be speaking about my grandparents, Esther and Elias Mordechai—Greek Holocaust survivors whose stories, like so many, were nearly lost. 87% of Greece’s Jewish population perished in the Holocaust. I’m honored to help carry their legacy forward through remembrance, healing, and the pursuit of restorative truth.Use code 3GDC18 for discounted tickets here. Hope to see you there.
