This year, 3GDC continues to lead Yom HaShoah commemorations across our region, the centerpiece of which is the annual memorial program at Sixth & I Historic Synagogue on April 17. As in years past, that program will feature powerful speakers from across generations, sharing firsthand accounts of survival and family experiences. The 2023 program will highlight the eightieth anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising and will feature a 3G speaker with a personal connection to the Warsaw Ghetto. Participants will light memorial candles, recite the Kaddish, and have an opportunity to join with members of the community to pay tribute to the 6 million Jews who perished at the hands of the Nazis while honoring the courage of those who survived and resisted. This year, 3GDC is partnering not only with Sixth & I and JCRC but with Action Reconciliation Service for Peace and Arlington’s Moishe House.
Also this month, 3GDC will be continuing our recurring series of mediative talks, 3GDCircle: A Micro-community Discussion Group Set in Nature for Descendants of Holocaust Survivors, in partnership with Briyut at Adas Israel. On Sunday, April 16, third-generation survivors will have an opportunity to gather outdoors for a discussion about trauma, shared experiences, and other impacts of the Holocaust on our families.
Throughout the Yom HaShoah season of remembrance, 3GDC continues to provide trained speakers to share their grandparents’ Holocaust testimony, including with those who may have never before heard such an account. Our speakers will be at Fort Meade, Fort Belvoir, the St. Albans School, and the Temple Micah Hebrew School, among other places where our speakers can share the critical lessons of the Holocaust.
As we pause to remember the 6 million, 3GDC continues to fulfill our sacred mission to carry on our grandparents’ work of ensuring that “Never Again!” is no mere slogan but a rallying cry for action. May the memories of the Holocaust’s victims be a blessing and an inspiration as we continue to face the challenges of antisemitism, ignorance, intolerance, and hatred in our day.
